Julius Meinl

Our future. More than a moment.

At Julius Meinl, we feel a strong sense of responsibility to our planet as well as those involved at every stage of our coffee and tea journey as we work together to bring premium quality to every cup.

As a fifth-generation family business, it is up to us to take an active role in establishing responsible practices along our entire value chain.

Our Key Sustainability Pillars

At the heart of our mission is a focus on responsible practices, centered around three key pillars: responsible sourcing of coffee, addressing our key carbon emission hotspots from bean to cup, and strengthening employee engagement.

Bringing Vienna’s coffee house culture to the world, rooted in a deep respect for our planet and for future generations.

Origin

Building a coffee supply chain with responsible sourcing practices in coffee origins through our Responsibly Selected Coffee Initiative and Generations Programme.

Planet

Caring for our planet. Addressing our key carbon emission hotspots from bean to cup by for example installation of catalytic converters in our roasters.

Julius Meinl People

Driving high engagement. 'Together we grow'. Enduring business progress through comitted, connected people.

Responsibly Selected Coffee Initiative

Enjoying a cup of Julius Meinl coffee is about more than just taste; it's knowing you’re contributing to our Responsibly Selected Coffee Initiative.

At Julius Meinl, Responsibly Selected Coffee means that the green coffee beans we source for roasting in our production plants in Vienna and Vicenza come from sustainability schemes recognized by the Global Coffee Platform (GCP) as aligned with its Coffee Sustainability Reference Code. The Code establishes a common baseline for more sustainable coffee production across environmental, social and economic dimensions. It includes critical requirements that all aligned sustainability schemes are expected to meet, covering areas such as protecting forests and other natural ecosystems, prohibiting child and forced labour, safeguarding workers’ health and safety, and complying with applicable laws. In addition, the Code includes continuous improvement practices, encouraging efforts in areas such as soil health, responsible water use, biodiversity conservation, farm management and record-keeping. Through its Equivalence Mechanism, GCP assesses whether sustainability schemes align with the Reference Code and meet additional criteria on governance, assurance, traceability, data management and claims.

From 2026, all green coffee beans sourced for roasting in our production plants in Vienna and Vicenza are sourced through GCP-recognized sustainability schemes.

This excludes a limited number of locally sourced products in selected markets (such as Turkish coffee for the Croatian market or specific coffee capsules for the US market)  and externally sourced global items such as instant coffee, which fall outside the scope of this commitment at the moment.

Generations Programme

We are committed to the future of coffee as much as we honour its rich history. Through our Generations Programme, we work with partners to implement projects in selected coffee origin countries, currently active in Colombia, India, Honduras and Uganda. These initiatives engage a selected number of coffee farmers participating in the programme, rather than covering all farmers in the regions.

The aim of the programme is to help preserve and pass on traditional farming knowledge to younger generations, while supporting participating communities in adapting to climate change. By providing practical training and resources, the programme seeks to help participating farmers strengthen agricultural practices and improve yields and incomes.

Collaborating for the Future of Coffee

At Julius Meinl, we work to support more resiliant coffee and tea supply chains by collaborating with a selected network of partners, including suppliers, NGOs, farmer organisations, roasters, community initiatives and public-sector stakeholders in coffee origin countries. These partnerships are designed to support targeted initiatives that contribute to positive developments in specific areas of the value chain where we are directly engaged, rather than representing full coverage of all supply chain actors or regions.
