New product alert: Biodegradable eco-friendly capsules

We’ve got some good news for you – your passionate love affair with coffee can be combined with your efforts to live green. All while enjoying the convenience (and taste) of making your morning brew with single-use coffee capsules.

If you’re using the right capsules, that is.

Our standards in the kind of coffee we create in our own kitchens have gone through the roof in recent years. These ambitions of many to be a barista at home (ok, nobody can replace your favourite cafe’s barista’s smile, but you know what we mean) has subsequently led to the rise of the coffee capsule in a big way.

Now, like with any trend that spreads quickly, it’s good to direct an eyeball (or two) on what side effects that trend has on the bigger picture aka the planet on which we live and drink our coffee on.

This beautiful planet of ours is a priority for us at Julius Meinl, as we’re sure it is for you seeing as you clicked on this post.

In the last few years, through research and innovation, eco-friendly capsules have been developed made out of biodegradable materials. This makes them compostable, meaning they create minimum waste, meaning we can enjoy our coffee knowing we’re looking out for the environment at the same time.

We’re forever aiming to be a global coffee brand that does our part on the sustainability front, and are very committed to our eco-responsibilities.

To ensure we’re all making the best choices for the planet, we’ve rounded up a few things you should know when choosing what sustainable coffee capsule to go for.

There are three kinds of eco-coffee capsules

Eco-friendly coffee capsules come in three types – there's the aluminium variety that needs emptying before recycling, compostable capsules made out of organic materials, and a reusable stainless steel type.

Julius Meinl’s Bio Inspresso capsules are 100% biodegradable and we’re proud of the innovation we’ve pulled off here. Made out of Biopolymer, and free of aluminium and plastic, our capsules are fully industrially compostable.

Beware of the quality of coffee within

We’re going to be honest – it’s not easy producing a coffee capsule that is made out of sustainable materials AND keeps the intense aromas and flavours of coffee locked in until it’s that little capsule's time to shine. There are few substitutes for the seal that plastic provides; no matter how much we all want to reduce our use of the stuff, it’s the ugly truth.

One insider insight we can give you is that the crucial factor that comes into play when trying to deliver the rich aromas and flavours of fresh coffee to somebody’s home, or cafe, is the packaging.

That’s why you should definitely take some time researching the technology being used to protect the freshness of the coffee in the capsule. If you can’t be bothered with that, just go ahead and try a variety of the capsules, and we guarantee you'll notice a distinct difference in intensity between the different capsules.

Of course, we’d highly recommend you include the Julius Meinl’s Bio Inspresso capsules in your taste testing. We’ve gone as far to patent our aroma seal technology. Also – while you’d think we’d keep things cool as a coffee brand – the coffee nerds in us are busting to tell you that it even won a ‘Packaging Innovation Award’ at a hospitality trade fair in Milan.

We’re aiming to become more sustainable everyday

Releasing our range of biodegradable, eco-friendly capsules is only one of the many things we’re doing to make our practices put the planet first at Julius Meinl.

Sustainability is a commitment we take seriously and it’s at the core of who we are in 2021, and into the future.

So, you can expect more posts like this moving forward that will hopefully help you make eco-friendly decisions when it comes to you and your coffee.
